How to Feel Confident in Front of the Camera

Most people feel awkward in front of a camera. You’re not alone. Whether it’s a family session, a couples shoot or an event, almost everyone tells me they’re “not photogenic” or “never know what to do with their hands.”
The good news is you don’t need to be naturally confident. You just need a few simple tricks and a photographer who knows how to guide you.
Here’s how to feel relaxed, natural and confident the next time you step in front of a camera.
1. Start by Moving Around
Standing still makes anyone tense. Before we start shooting, I usually get people walking, chatting or doing something small and natural.
Things like:
Walking together
Playing with the kids
Straightening clothes
Laughing or chatting with each other
Movement eases nerves. It gives your body something to do and helps you forget about the camera completely.
2. Focus on Each Other, Not the Lens

One of the easiest ways to look confident is simply not to look at the camera. When you interact with the people you’re with, your expressions become natural. The smile you give your partner or child is far better than any posed grin.
Try:
Talking to each other
Sharing a joke
Holding hands
Hugging or leaning in
These tiny moments bring out real emotion, which always photographs beautifully.
3. Wear Something You Feel Good In
Confidence starts with comfort. Avoid anything too tight, too new or too fussy. When you’re fiddling with clothes, it shows.
Good choices include:
Soft, breathable fabrics
Clothes that move easily
Outfits you already know you look great in
Colours that suit your skin tone and location
If you’re comfortable, you’ll naturally look more confident.
4. Don’t Overthink Your Face
Your face will change naturally as you talk, breathe and move. The moments in between the “posed” ones are usually the best.
If you struggle with forced smiles, try:
Breathing out slowly
Smiling only with your eyes first
Thinking of something genuinely funny
Relaxing your jaw instead of clenching
A relaxed expression looks confident. Not forced.
5. Trust Your Photographer

My whole job is to help you look and feel your best.
I’ll guide you into natural poses that don’t feel like posing.
I’ll adjust your angles, fix your hair if needed, make sure you’re in good light and help you relax through simple prompts.
You don’t have to perform. You just have to show up. I’ll take care of the rest.
6. Take Breaks When You Need Them
If you feel a wobble coming on, it’s okay to pause.
A quick breather, a sip of water or a change of location helps your nerves settle. There’s never any rush.
Great photos don’t come from pushing through discomfort. They come from feeling at ease.
7. Remember That Confidence Isn’t a Look
Confidence isn’t about being perfect. It’s about allowing yourself to be real.
Your laugh. Your natural expressions. Your connection with the people you’re with.
Those are the things that make a photo feel alive.
Final Thoughts
Feeling confident in front of the camera isn’t something you’re born with. It’s something that grows when you’re relaxed, comfortable and guided well.
If you’re thinking about a photoshoot but feel nervous about being photographed, I’d love to help. My sessions at WhatNotTog are relaxed, friendly and built around real moments, not stiff poses.
